When the chief executive of one of the world’s largest investment management firms highlights the importance of sustainability in his annual letter to CEOs, it might be time to sit up and listen.
BlackRock’s Larry Fink’s 2022 missive included a section dedicated to Capitalism and sustainability. In it, he talks about how all stakeholders –shareholders, employees, customers, communities, and regulators – now expect companies to play a role in decarbonising the global economy, and describes it as a ‘tectonic shift’ towards sustainable investing which shows no signs of slowing down.
Putting a figure on global sustainable development
It is hard to assess exactly how much is invested globally in ESG funds. In his letter, Fink went with US$4trillion. This already huge figure is dwarfed by calculations from the Global Sustainable Investment Alliance. Their 2020 review states that global sustainable investment reached US$35.3trillion in five major markets at the beginning of 2020, a 15% increase in just two years. According to their data, sustainable investment assets under management make up a total of 35.9% of total assets under management, up from 33.4% in 2018.
Wherever the truth lies, it is incontrovertible that sustainable investing is here to stay. And that ESG investors definitely do not need to sacrifice return. On the contrary, sustainable investing is a viable route to achieving your long-term financial planning goals.
