Bangkok often seems like such a sprawl of urbanisation, almost cavernous in some areas, surrounded by skyscrapers and overhead roads or railways. It is easy to forget how close we are to beautiful countryside and the array of wildlife that it supports. Just 30 minutes drive from downtown Bangkok there are quiet country roads which traverse vast swathes of paddy fields and farmlands where there is an amazing variety of birds couple with quaint country life.
In May, a group of Harrow International School parents and teachers tackled an 80km stretch of this scenic countryside to raise funds for, and awareness of, the work done by Rainbow House, an orphanage for disabled children run by CCD, a privately operated charity serving hundreds of children with disabilities in Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani and Manorom. Located just a short drive from the school, Harrow students have been visiting Rainbow House each week for the last 4 years.
This event, cosponsored by Infinity Financial Solutions, saw the riders set off from Ayutthaya’s famous Wat Chai Wattanaram in colourful “Ride for Rainbow” bike shirts to begin their lengthy journey along the picturesque route to their finishing point at Harrow in Don Muang. A wide range of age (20s to 70s), experience and fitness level was represented but with regular water stops and the support of the pack, all would be able to successfully complete the course.
